The 3 Golden Questions about the iPad and AAC

iPads are becoming increasingly popular in the field of AAC.

They have huge potential to impact on learning, leisure and life. This page endeavours to tell you about when and why Keycomm consider providing iPads for individuals with communication difficulties.

We ask ourselves three questions when considering an iPad for a user. The first question is the most important.

1. Does the individual need to use AAC strategies, and how has this been decided?

Before embarking upon using an iPad for communication, we would always advise that the individual has an AAC assessment to determine whether a voice output communication device is the right strategy to support the individual’s communication.

2. What job do I want the iPad to do for the individual?

It is also important to think about why you want the individual to have access to an iPad. Is it as an alternative means of communication, is it because it is a motivating education tool, or is it for leisure activities, such as watching YouTube, or checking email? The reason for its use will determine whether a referral to Keycomm is appropriate, and if not applicable, will give you an idea of which app to look for for the other purposes.

3. Can the individual access or work an iPad?

The iPad is very sensitive and some people find it extremely difficult to use the screen successfully. It would be a good idea to try out an iPad at a shop first, before you buy. When we consider introducing a device, an individual’s access, or ability to use the screen, is a major factor in choosing the most appropriate device.

How can Keycomm help?

Keycomm focuses upon supporting communication. We consider all types of AAC strategies and consider a wide range of devices when recommending voice output communication devices.

We only consider introducing an iPad, or other communication device, if they are going to be used for communication, and it can be shown that it will add to the current successful communication strategies already in place.

For those already using an iPad at home, we will profile different apps from time to time in our News and Updates section.  You may also want to have a look at the SPLAT iPad Apps for First Skills Development.
